(1) At the University of Winchester
Since I arrived in Winchester in 2002 (when the institution was called King Alfred's College), I have taught on a variety of courses/modules of tourism management and business management, but I am now focusing:
|
on
arts management; I am now based in the
Faculty of Arts where I
am the programme director of an
MA in Cultural and Arts Management.
A pdf brochure
may be downloaded by
clicking here. It is a programme mainly with part-time
students. One of my projects is to develop it as a distance
learning course too.
We have a
blog that can be accessed here. I am working on a (pecha kucha
style) presentation that will soon be on youtube (am in the final stage
of synchronising the music ;-) | |
|
on enterprise education, a University-wide scheme which is all about small business start-up and entrepreneurship (I like that course for two main reasons: (a) because of the diversity of students I work with, and (b) because it has direct concrete applications (as some students end up setting up their own business). |
I got my National Teaching Fellowship for my work on those two programmes.
(2) Open University
I like the Open University (OU) because of their ethos of being open to all learners & and lifelong learning in general. I teach two courses at level 3: Business Management (B300) and French (LZX310). Both are at level 3, which is very interesting. I also mentor new colleagues and I am deliver workshops of staff development (for example about online teaching). Working for the OU is very good for me at both personal level (because of the quality of the students and colleagues I interact with) and professional level (because of the way I gradually improve my pedagogy, learning how to reflect on my own practice and becoming a better tutor).
# Another teaching award:
last year, I received the "Business School Tutor of the Year"
award :-)
(3) Assessment work
I work for
two exam boards:
-
AQA
(Assessment & Qualifications Alliance)-- I am Principal Examiner for a GCE
(A2) unit in Travel & Tourism and Principal Examiner for one at
GCSE level.
-
IBO
(International Baccalaureate Organisation) -- I am Chief Examiner for Business
& Management (at Diploma level)
As mentioned elsewhere, I am
also a Fellow of the
Institute of
Educational Assessors.
I have realised that this work, mainly in terms of assessment, has enabled me to markedly improve my pedagogical skills (esp. in the way I design and apply marking schemes for the courses I am responsible for.)
Besides, I also work as a consultant and examiner for the OHTM (Organisation for Hospitality and Tourism Management) and I a am a visiting professor at the Ecole de Savignac on their MBA Hospitality Management.
